Recently bought this thing...fired it up and makes a racket with clutch held all the way down...let it up just a little and goes away...what is causing this?
Doesn't like to go into gear...kinda grinds...suggestion?
Where do you check/fill hydraulics?
Guy I bought it from said it takes 30 weight nondetergent oil?

Appreciate your comments.
Thanks Reaver

Sounds to me like the throwout bearing fork is hiting the pressure plate release levers. The pilot bearing may also be bad causing the clutch shaft not to stop. Therefore the clutch is rally not disengaging. The breather on the hydraulic unit has a dip stick attached to it. Where are you located? That would make up my mind on what I would use for hydraulic oil. Newer hydraulic oils have additives in them, so there goes the non-detergent theory. Questions?

I am located in Southern Indiana.
The clutch must be disengaging or when I actually put it in gear it would start taking off / kill the tractor....correct?
Just seems a little harder to get into gear than it should, but works fine once in gear...seems to help if you pull back the power booster before shifting into gear.
Are you thinking I have a serious problem or not?

Always pull the Power Booster handle back to aid in shifting. Yes the clutch is releasing, but if the pilot bearing is bad the clutch shaft will still want to rotate thus causing a clutch dragging condition. I would not call that a serious pboblem. Less than a day and you can be going as long as you have a means of pulling the engine.

Sounds to me like the clutch is about shot, probably why the other guy sold it in the first place. It may work fine while in gear, but if it grinds to egt it in gear, it isn't fully disengaging when it's in gear either and it's just wearing faster, and it could get really bad really quick if you don't do something. Seems to me like this guy may not have been completely honest when he sold it....

If you have any mechanical background, and a good overhead hoist of some kind, a clutch isn't the worst thing to have to do, although you have to remove the engine to do so.
