2655 Air Cleaner Questions

A friend asked me this question the other day. He just received his 2655 National Show tractor and wanted to know about the external air cleaner mounted on the right side frame. Was this factory or some add-on? My guess was a factory option having to do with the turbo version not having enough room under the hood for the bigger air cleaner required to feed it. I have seen them with and without this type air cleaner.

Anybody out there got a better answer?

I had always understood that the '71 models had the external air cleaner and the '72 models had it incorporated under the hood. I saw a '72 model recently that had the air cleaner under the hood. What was said about the turbocharger makes sense too I suppose, but I didn't think that you could get a turbocharger on that engine from factory. Any MM guys know the story?

C.H. Wendel's book about the Oliver Corporation was where I got the idea of turbo and non-turbo engines. I don't know if that is fact or not. I have noticed a few other errors in that book. I am not knocking his book or his efforts. In a book with that much info there are bound to be a few errors. At least someone made the effort to do a book about something other than John Deere.

Another wrinkle on those tractors was for a while they had a promotion where you could order one with the 800 cubic inch L-P engine. I have seen one. It had the air cleaner on the outside, On the turbo, it was a "field installation" and was introduced after the 585 engines had been in production for several years. To my knowledge no turboed 585 engines were offered from the factory, but we sold 2 A4T-1400 models that had the 504 diesel with a factory (they were M & W kits) turbo. Does that help or make it more confusing?

Hi John,

The dealership I worked at sold three with 800 LP engines. I'm not sure if they were painted as Molines or Olivers. He sold these in place of 2150s that could not be shipped from the factory at that time. WB.

The May 2005 Toy Farmer magazine featured the 2655 and showed prototypes of the 2005 Farm Show toy tractor. This is what it says about the air breather, "It will probably have the aftermarket black turbo air cleaner".

Well, its actually a Minneapolis-Moline tractor painted Oliver green, so basically anything goes on those tractors. You are more then likely to get an answer from a Moline guy, on their page.

I appreciate you trying to show my ignorance to everyone who reads this. I happen to know that it is a green A4T-1600 Moline. Since by this time they were all part of the White family I don't feel that it matters. If you can't help with the question just keep your comments to yourself please.

Sorry for ruining your day, sir. Maybe you should just take it as a light joke, as its intended to be.

finish my thought- the joke wasnt directed towards you, its directed towards the oddness, or uniqueness of a Minneapolis Moline tractor

I may have overreacted. There have been a few times I have tried to help others with their questions just to have someone else "put me in my place". It is very frustrating. I know I am not an expert to people here but to my other antique tractor friends I am the closest thing to an Oliver guru that they know.
