Low Oil Pressure on a Super 55

Hello,
I need some help from the experts. A customer brought his Oliver Super 55 so I could install power steering on it. While I was installing the steering unit, he changed the all the fluids including the engine oil...of which he replaced the filter and installed a new oil guage.

When we started the tractor, the new guage shows around 5-8 lbs oil pressure. The old gauge indicated 25 lbs before it was broken.

I know on the Ford tractors (2N, 9N, 8N) one can tighten the spring on the relief valve to give more pressure. Can that be done on the Oliver?
What is the normal oil pressure the engine should run? Maybe the new guage is calibrated different then the old? What are we missing? Any help will be appreciated. We are both tired and not able to think...maybe we need to sleep on it???

Hi Ken,
Yes it is an aftermarket...add on unit...that will convert your Oliver's steering to hydrostatic. Right now I only have steering for the Super 55 and the Oliver 555. I will be adding steering to other Oliver models as I have time and am able to locate and bring the tractors to my facility.

The steering unit is powered by the front mounted loader pump, however I do plan to offer a belt driven power steering pump for those Olivers without loaders.

Also, I am really excited about the front mounted hydraulic reservoir that I am working on. It will be ready to go into production sometime next month. The unit will look just like tractor weights in the front....but has a 9 GMP Vane pump in-bedded within the reservoir. This allows the unit to be as close to the front of the tractor as possible.

The front mounted hydraulic system upgrades the hydraulic system on older tractors by giving them full time hydraulics that is fast and strong. One can run a log splitter with ease and speed...as well as power steering...or any other useful hydraulic application the mind can think up. And the unit blends in with the tractor...it really looks good.

I am in the process of updating my website. New pictures of the Oliver will be posted on www.jacksonpowersteering.com . My site could be down a few days as a result of the changes. So, would be glad to email pictures to anyone interested.

Thanks for your inquiry. It is always a joy to share what is going on at Jackson Power Steering. I look forward to getting to know more Oliver owners and learning from them here at the Oliver board.

I think your clue is in that he changed the filter. Does this tractor still have the aluminum filter base? If so most likely the "stem" that goes into the filter came out with the filter. Underneath that "stem" is a small steel disk the same diameter as the stem. That disk has an orfice drilled in it which resticts oil flow and raises oil pressure. That was not real common but the two parts came as a kit and we always stocked them. The later one have a cast iron filter base and a short stem and they gave a lot less problems. Questions? Part number of repair is a KS 5506 I think. I would get the later cast filter base if it does not have one.

Thanks so much for your help. You nailed it! That was the problem. Yes...he has the aluminum filter base. I really appreciate the information.

Best Wishes
