I recently repaired the PTO on my gas Oliver 550. Mine engages when you shove the hand lever forward, not backward. When adjusted properly there is a camming action that holds it in place. The proper adjustment is a certain amount of pounds to pull out of engagement. My book is down on the farm a hundred miles away or I could give you the amount. If there isn't any mechanical problem with the three arms that pull the clutch to the PTO in, you can take an inspection plate off under the tractor, (right below where you grease this mechanism) push in a spring loaded detent and either tighten or loosen a collar to properly adjust. Bucheitt Company has a manual for the Super 55 and 550 that describes this procedure. In my case, I split the tractor, replaced a broken piece on one of the three cams, and then adjusted. If I could have found the problem first, I believe I could have repaired through the inspection plate. I did the final adjustment (after the tractor was back together) through the inspection plate.
