I was moving bales this weekend and I started to have trouble turning to the left. The wheel felt very heavy and resisted my attempts to force it left. I had no problems turning right. Am I experiencing the early stages of steering motor failure or is it more likely to be a problems with the actuator mechanism below the radiator?
We are starting to get cold up here and I doubt it will work any better at -30 below. I have checked the fluid level and it is fine.

The unit under the steering wheel is going bad. This is why i don't use rebulit saginaw units.I replace with char-lin units and have had no problems.

I am having the same problem with my 1800 with the Gremmer unit. seems I remember you saying you replaced them too. What part number or kit from Charlinn do you use and how much of the system to you replace? Does the Charlinn still work off of the hydraulics?

It sounds like both components when they start to fail create the same symptoms. I guess I will start with changing out the most accessible part for now and see what happens.

I have this problem on an 1800B series and it is in the unit under the radiator. Yours is a different system than mine but the problem sounds the same and I think the units are similar in operation.

I have the same problem on my 1555 turning right . On mine , you put pressure on the steering wheel to the right and the tires seem to gradually jerk to the right . I only have the problem with a bale of hay or heavy weight on the front end loader . My 1555 has a fairly new hydraulic pump and a recently rebuilt steering motor . We have mild winters here in SC so I have been just putting up with the problem for a year or so . I seem to recall a post on this site in the last year which suggested a problem like this was in the o rings in the steering cylinder underneath the grill and the radiator . I think the post said one of the o rings is bad letting oil leak past one side . I have just been waiting on bad weather or when I am out of other things to do to tear into the steering cylinder . I helped a friend rebuild one on a 1650 and it is not much trouble once you get everything taken off to get to the cylinder . Do a search on this cite for "steering" or "steering problems" and maybe you can find the old post .
