Oliver 66RC converted from 6V to 12V. Is a ballast resistor still required? I"m using an alternator, 12Volt coil, 6volt starter switch. The ballast resistor is still connected to the coil. Thanks, Garry

Garry, the answer depends on if that so called 12 volt coil is REALLY a 12 volt or a 6??? if its really a 12, obviously no ballast is required, HOWEVER if like Old noted its labeled "12 volts for use with an external ballast" then you need it.

If it runs so hot you cant leave your hand on it, its likely really a 6 volt n needs the ballast.

A 6 volt coil would have around 1.5 to 2 or a lil over ohms in its primary as measured betwen its lil + and - terminals, while a true 12 volt would measure in the 2.5 to 3.5 ohms range.

Depends on the coil some 12 volt coils say no resister needed and some say you need a resistor. Should say on the side of the coil which type you have.
