My 1958 540 Cockshutt starts easy, but will only run for a minute or two before the engine dies. I think it's a carb problem judging from the marks the previous owner left on the side of the carb from beating on it. Where is the best place to get a replacement carb from, or any other idea's on what the problem might be? The current carb is a Zenith updraft.

Money must not be a problem. In 16 years working for a dealer we only sold one new carburetor and it was under warrenty so we really did not sell it. Sounds like dirt to me. I would check it good and rig of a gauge to see if the carburetor fills it self with fuel. Start there. What model carburetor do you have?

The carb is a Zenith, but the numbers cast into the carb are not readable, and there is not a tag on it. However, it looks like the picture of the model 68J that the service manual shows for the tractor.I'll try cleaning it out again this weekend, but thought it might need replacing since it is all dented up from being smacked on with something by the previous owner. The tractor had not been used for at least a couple of years before I aquired it, and I'd like to get it running right so I can list it for sale.
