I have 2 1855's and both have basicly the same problems. most of the time things work fine, then all of a sudden the pump start squeeling like a stuck pig and all hydr function stops for a sec. then everything is back to normal. when I am baling and i step hard on the brake the pto quits. at other times when I turn on the end of the field the powersteering locks up for a few sec and then works fine again.

I have taken the pump, priority valve and relieve valve apart and can't find a damned thing wrong. all the preasures are where they are supposed to be.

The dealers don't know nothing and are only interested in selling new and thereby offering only scrap prices for the old one's.

Any body out there with sugestions what could cause the trouble

O. K. So I have friends in Michigan. If you called me and the tractor came to me from what you told me I would check the following and I would like to know the pressure values of these. Compensator pressure, Relief valve pressure, PTO valve pressure. Something I have never done on one without charge pump have you put a vacuum gauge on it with a loop line installed? Just for fun have you checked the case drain for flow. Also how good is the filter and like Ian asked what are you using for fluid? Are these early 1855 models and what are doing with the hydraulic unit? What I am looking for, do you run any other things with other valves and if so where does your oil return and do you have any idea if you have a defusser on that line. Let us start there.

These are a lot of questions. I try to answer them.
1 For oil I use THG hydr transmission fluid, allready for 20 odd years in the one tractor'in the other one sinds i bought it 8 years ago.

2 It has been a while and can't remember the pressure values but have set them according to the manual.pto valve preasure i never checked

3 The oil and filters have been changed when i started to have these problems, cause the filter came to mind as the first thing to give trouble.
the case drain is wide open on both tractors.

4 the tractors are both early 70's.

5 one tractor has just 2 remotes, that is the one that kicks the pto out when I brake, about once or twice an hour while baling. and has the powersteering cut out once in a while to, but not both at the same time.

the other tractor has 4 remotes,I added 2 to the side of the original valves. I have a front end loader on it.
This one does most of the squeeling, and stops all hydr functions when it does.
The problem is that these troubles happen once in a while, some times it works fine for weeks and all of a sudden it can happen 10 times in a row.

I don;t have all that fancy equipment such as flow rators ,charge pumps and such.
I tought I could figure it out with a oil gauge in the right port. I guess i am wrong.

Get back with me in about a week or 10 days. We should be done with corn then and out of the last 12 work days I have been working 11 of them on new assignments so I have not much free time for this stuff. I would like to know the serial numbers of both units. J.

It sounds like your pump is cavitating. When is the last time you changed you hydraulic filter? Are you using a thin hydraulic fluid like true Type55, or a "will fit" universal fluid? There is no charge pump, the oil has to gravity flow through the paper filter and to thick a fluid can cause problems. John Schweibert is the real expert on this kid of question. The compensator could also be sticking not letting the pump come out of de-stroke for a second.
