Should I be impressed?

Yesterday I helped my dad harvest corn, and when we found we needed an extra tractor to pull in wagons, I hooked my Super 88 up to a Parker 4000 gravity wagon and went to work. The tickets from the elevator showed I was hauling around 440 bushels or 24,000+ pounds each load. The old 88 never bogged down, but the 13.6-38 tires did scratch a bit when going up inclines. My question is, should I be impressed with this performance? I just finished restoring the Super 88 this summer, and it's my first old Oliver, so I have no idea if this was normal or not. My 8-year-old son was amazed, and is already making plans to enter all kinds of tractor pulls next summer!

You should be impressed with the tractor, of
course the 88 is quite the tractor. It might
be a little overloaded with that kind of weight
but with a little gearing down on the down hill
slopes and a little common sense you'll be just
fine. Glad you're empressed with the tractor.
Go to pullin with it, they pull real well, hard
to beat in their class.

Like the others said, sure you got the power, but the brakes is the real question. One time our 1650 went down and we had to use our Super 77 to try to haul manure with our 3626 New Idea manure spreader. It pulled that full load right out of the yard, and then I hit a bump...the hitch ripped right off, and then we were out 2 tractors within an hour. Keep in mind what farming was like when these tractors were new; that will let you whats safe or not. Glad to hear though that you discovered that these old Olivers do lug quite well, and got some more power then you expected.

Good to hear the Super 88 get some respect. My Dad says this was the best tractor Oliver ever made and was ahead of it's time. We still have one that Grandpa bought new in 1955. There was alot of the Super 88's sold in my neck of the woods. We hade a strong dealer who really pushed the diesels.

No not really. You might have been something else if those tyres had started scratching a bit going down an incline with your gross weight if the trailer brakes weren"t too smart.

Yes! Very impressive. It reminds me when I pulled 16' forage boxes full of corn silage w/my 88 diesel.Yeah it could do it , but after an episode when I was pulling a full load up a steep hill I stalled the engine (too high a gear). The brakes couldn't stop the whole works from going back down the hill.I'll never forget that day .We have been using a 1650 diesel from that day on.An 1800 diesel pulls 275 bushel at a time going into town to the elevator.I know that pulling power of Olivers are amazing, but we have to make sure that we are here to pass the Oliver tradition over to our kids.~brad

As usual, you're all correct. I knew my little Oliver had no chance of getting that much wagon stopped, but I was pulling across a flat field, there was only a very slight incline at the driveway to the farmyard, and I was creeping along in 1st gear, so I felt fairly safe. My dad's farm also has a fairly large and steep hill, and I can recall many years ago having a 1650 Oliver nearly get away from me while pulling a couple of loaded gravity wagons. Scared the bejeezus out of me!

No, that is how Oliver's work! in reply to farmer-journalist, 10-23-2005 20:19:44
Be sure to throttle down before hitting the brakes. I thought everyone knew this but NO they don't! I was riding on a field day in Maryland with a big load of people on a hay wagon behind a 100 hp plus 77 and the Mennonite pushed in the clutch down the hills or before hitting the brakes!

I wanted to jump off but that would not have been nice either....
