Any guesses on causes of engine failure-1750?

I traded a tractor on an Oliver 1750 awhile back that spit a valve. My intentions are to fix it up. Here"s the story on it: It"s a 1750 gas and the guy that owned it got the engine all rebuilt (including new pistons/sleeves, new manifolds, new distributor, and other things). When he got it back from being rebuilt (don"t know if he did it himself) one of the valves broke and the piston pushed it up into the head. He was so disgusted he traded the tractor in on a John Deere at an implement dealer, which is where I bought it from. Surprisingly the connecting rod doesn"t seem to be bent at all but the piston took a beating. After taking it apart more last weekend, I found that the governor shaft (the part that is driven by the gear and the weights are mounted to) was broken. I am wondering if this broke before the valve let go resulting in excessive rpm or did it break when the engine suddenly came to a halt. Any theories? Thanks, Jeff

Just to let you guys know, I found out that there was a service bulletin for the 1750 and 1850 gas engines in 1970. The original governors were known to fail so Oliver updated them with a lighter stamped steel weight. Apparently mine was never updated. rooster

This just and educated guess but I would think the governor shaft broke first, the engine floated out and kissed the valve.

I don't think the engine came to an abrupt halt. More likely it it was shut off at a high rmp and then damage was arleady done.

Again, this is just my guess. Yor actual results may vary according to whom you ask.

I cannot disagree with your thinking. The stuff is getting aged but it can happen to any age...

I have an Oliver 1755 gasser I would part out if you would send me and email and a price, I don't know what it is worth.
