Was the Oliver engine designed by oliver when they bought Hart Parr? There was such a radical difference between the two tractors I have always wondered if they had plans from an engine manufacturer like Hercules.

The 28-44 was a scaled up 18-28. The 18-28 was the "utiliy" version of the 18-27. The 28-44 had the same Waukesha engine design just larger.

The first Oliver tractor was the Row Crop also known as the 18-27 and later as the Oliver 80. This tractor was designed by Oliver around 1928. Two years before the merger with Hart-Parr. The first official year selling this tractor was 1930. Oliver put both the Hart-Parr name and Oliver name on the tractor until around 1937 or so. This tractor used a 4 cylinder Waukesha engine built to Oliver's specs. The real Hart-Parr tractors and engines died with the merger in 1929. The Oliver 70 was introduced in 1935 and used a 6 cylinder engine that I think was made by Continental.

Amendment to my response: Oliver manufactured block,
head, manifolds, castings, etc. in Charles City.

Waukesha manufactured internal components-valves, rods,
pistons, sleeves, cranks, cams, etc.

It depends which tractor you are talking about. The engine in the 70 was a continental. The 77, 88 engine was a Waukesha. In later years Oliver used Detroit and Cat engines as well. Supposedly the engine in the 17-27, 28-44 were Hart-Parr engines. Maybe others could help us with that.

Oliver used many engine manufacturers throughout its
history. These included Detroit, Caterpillar, Perkins,
Continental, Hercules, and most widely used, the Oliver/Waukesha hybrid engine. This engine was used in most of Oliver's tractors. This engine consisted of the block, manifolds, head, accessory castings, etc., things that were easiliy manufactured without great precision. Internal components, such as crankshaft, camshaft, rods, pistons,
rockers, push rods, valves, etc. These were, for the most
part, great engines. The important thing to remember is that Waukesha worked jointly with Oliver to design and build
these engines so they were not simply "Waukesha"; they were Oliver/Waukesha engines.
