Hey, just bought this thing...my 1st Oliver. It is a 6 cylinder gas model with 3 point hitch which I really like the way the 3 point moves the drawbar also...pretty slick! Very good condition. One thing I find odd is the left brake is on the left side where clutch is...bet that don't get used much!...need two left feet :)
Questions:
1. What years were the 770s made?
2. How much gas will this thing consume?...hopefuly not a hog at these gas prices!
3. Any input on pros, cons, and things to know appreciated!
Thanks Reaver

Made from 1958 to mid 1967. Not too bad on fuel. Not too many people DON'T like these tractors. A good all around machine.

The 770 was made for 10 years +/-. We had one made in the last series, with the fiberglass grill. As far as gas consumption goes it is not bad. In the same era, we were running a 400 Farmall. The 400 had more HP, and would pull more, but you paid the price in fuel. The hydraulic system is a 1000# system, so you won"t have to worry about splitting any cylinders. When it became the 1550, real hydraulics were added, as far as I know. The gas 770 is unbelievable at starting in below zero weather. Take care of it. Those Olivers are great tractors. I have had several.

You bring up a question for me...I was planning on moving round hay bales approx 1,500 to 2,000 lbs. each. Are you saying it won't work with a 1,000lb hydraulic system? Will I hurt / break something if I try it?

Thanks Reaver

You'll like the 770. I wish I had a 3 point on mine. Maybe in the future. It will consume a little more fuel than some tractors of the same size. It's just the nature of the beast. It's a good solid tractor though and real easy to work on if need be. I've had mine for several years now and have it 90% restored now. I use it for pusing snow and dirt quite a bit and don't have anything bad to say in that respect. As far as the brake thing you mentioned, there should be 3 pedals. There should be a center linking pedal that you push to activate both sides at once which is helpful. That pedal floats in a slot that is to the inside of each pedal. I usually use the one one on the left when I set the brakes. The only other thing that is common on these as issues is that the battery cover will crack on the hinge side if it hasn't been taken care of and also the steering likes to wear through the sheet metal down towards the knuckle below the coil. Keep the collar adjusted in and this won't be an issue. I like mine and you won't find many older tractors that are easier to use and maintain than these. Just simple maintenance and you should be set. Good luck.

Around 50HP sorry can't say much more about it I've never had a 770. But I have 77s and there close to the same tractor and they are good strong pulling tractors.

In My opinion, about the best all around tractor in it's class. VERY easy to manuver and fun to operate. I use 2 to cut and bale hay.
