Gentlemen, I am currently looking into purchasing a plow to use with my 60 row-crop during our local plow day event. The plow that I am considering is an Oliver drag type plow with a left and right trip.
The owner said the cut is 18". Can a 60 handle a single bottom 18 in moderate to heavy soil?? I'm looking for some hard proof here so please if you have first hand experience or an eyewitness account let me know this so that I can weigh your opinion correctly. Thanks

All the old folks around here always said it takes 1 horsepower per inch of ground you're turning over in avg soils
2-12's = 24hp They use to also say that it took a gallon of gas per hp per 10 hour day when working at tractors rated load

Thank you all for your input, if y'all are saying 2 -12's works well I am going to try the plow based on the following deduction. I figure that 2-12's given a certain amount of overlap and various conditions( pulling straight or not) should cut out between 20 and 22 inches. This is still more total cut than the single 18, the only difference being the single bottom takes the entire cut in one slab. As far as weight, The tractor I want to use is on full steel wheels, I'm not sure if thats good or bad. Remember that this is just a one day for FUN event. I am not trying to make a living plowing with a 60. Regarless of the outcome I'll post a picture in mid Nov. Might be in the tractors or might be in "stuck and troubled". Thanks again.

It looks like a No. 21 Two-Way Plow. They could
be gotten with 16" or 18" bottems. The long hub
cap was so the wheel could be adjusted in or out
for 16" or 18" bottems.
We had a single bottem 16" to pull with our 60.
Later we got 2 12" plow so I see no reson why
you cannot pull a 18"

that is an Oliver two way trailer plow and they don't pull real easy. A good running 60 should have enough power in 1st gear, but you will have to put some weight on the tractor. My gut feel is it will require at least 1000# of ballast to use that plow effectivly with a 60. The 2 bottom 12" would work better but still require weight. In medium ground a single 14" on a 2500# tractor is a good match pulling in 2nd gear. Most of us forget that In their working clothes most old tractors had loaded tires and a stack of wheel weights.

Sounds like you need this little plow I have. Its a 2 bottom 12 grass hooper oliver plow. Its going to a show this week end. A 60 should pull one that size with no trouble. I pull it with a JD-B and it works just fine and a 60 has a little more pull then that B

I'll take a look at it and see if I can tell you anything. Can't say I know anything about that one. I've never seen one like that before.
