While walking in my woods I found an old plow share marked oliver 40.DS with what appears to be an 1871 patent. Any information on the history of the plow would be appreciated. Thanks.

The 40DS is the plow share for the oliver 40 series wood beam walking plow. This plow was one of the first oliver chilled plows and was in production for at least 60 years and possibly as many as 80 years. If yours has a patent date on it it was most likely made while the chilled patent was still in effect, as the lettering was hard to cast and after the patent ran out and the patterns were replaced the date was left off. I would say that your plow point was made prior to or around 1900. As the plow share or point was a wear item farmers would carry a spare along with the plow wrench , harness parts, and harness repair tools to the field with them in a bag on the horses back. If the share wore down or broke it was replaced in the field and the old one if not repairable was discarded. The No. 40 was one of the most popular plows of all time and was Olivers largest seller, they were particularly suited for use in sandy, gravelly or clay soils and were sold by the thousands world wide. Production records are not known but it is safe to say that hundreds of thousands of this plow were built and sold. However your share with a patent date makes it very early and one of the rareist no. 40 shares. 40DS shares were made in right hand only. Enjoy your treasure and go back and look for the rest of the plow just in case it was left near by, by the farmer who knows how many years ago.

I want to thank John Holcomb for his excellent and informative reply on the 40DS plow share. The fact that it was found in a hilly wooded area near the upper bank of a stream bed makes me wonder whether this area was previously cleared and farmed 100 years ago. I will check with one of my older neighboring farmers to see if he knows any of the history. Thanks again.
