The whine in the transmission, most apparent in road gear, is simply the result of the sloppiness inherent in a spur gear transmission. As the teeth mesh together, there exists a certain clearance that causes the teeth to strike one another and behave much like a tuning fork does when you strike it. The harder you strike it, the louder it whines. Oliver was not the only manufacturer to have this problem. A number of customers complained about these noisy transmissions in the Fleetlines and Supers. We have to live with them. But Oliver introduced a helical gear transmission in the 880 and this reduced the whine significantly. A thicker oil will help somewhat also, but otherwise, as others can attest, you must simply live with it.
