Just got this Oliver 1855 home from the auction today. Bought the thing so fast I didn't get to check anything out on it other than it was running good and my 2nd bid of 2,500 was the final bid.

3pt lift arms won't respond to lever. My other two levers make their 4 hoses move and tighten at disconnects at the rear of the tractor. I can feel no force when lifting the free hanging 3pt arms while my wife moves the lever back and forth. Fluid level is full. However, I can get my 3pt lever to nudge to neutral when the lever is fully forward, if I reach down and grab and jerk up fast on the arms myself. Buying the shop manual at the farm store tomorrow, but really am new to hydraulics, so I thought I would post in case someone has any ideas.

Thanks,
Bruce in Kansas

power assist steering works as I thought I read a post about it being tied into hydraulics.

I recently purchased an 1855 rear end. I put an 1850 front frame and the perkins on it. When i started it the 3 pt arms when all of the way up and stayed there, even when i moved the lever. I talked to maibach tractor in ohio. They told me that sometimes one of the roll pins in the linkage system (from the lever to the valve inside the housing) has a tendency to shear. Someone on this board suggested that i begin by taking off the top cover (under the seat) and begin searching. The problem ended up being that the valve spool was stuck from sitting. I freed up the valve and it was fine. The roll pin was not sheared though. maybe something similar is wrong with yours. Maybe the valve spool was stuck and someone pulled on the lever hard and sheared one of those pins. I hope this helps.

There is a "relief valve" attached to the 3-point lift cylinder. It is stickly for shock loads as it is set higher than the system relief valve. It is attached to the lift cylinder with a HIGH pressure elbow. every now and then one of those elbows fails. So by moving the 3 point handle the oil now passes through the broken elbow instead of lifting the 3-point.

Is the 3-point lift cylinder under the big thick lid/cover held down with bolts that is under the seat? Looks like I won't be getting a manual anytime today. Backorder... Thought I would blindly ask that question to see if I could get stuff opened up and going anyway. ALso, you said that "every now and then one of those elbows fails". Did you mean the relief valve? because if you meant the elbow, I don't understand that.

I NEED A MANUAL QUICK DON'T I???

Thank You

Most likely the ELBOW has broken off and is laying in the bottom of the reservoir along with the relief valve which is attached to the broken elbow. Your "shaft" is an adjustment. Send me an e-mail address or a phone number and I will try to explain it in more detail. The hydraulic unit will need to come off. More questions?

Would appreciate a few minutes on the phone. I believe I understand the broken elbow now. Call anytime, even late.

Thank You

Re: PICTURE in reply to Bruce in KS, 09-06-2005 10:12:08
third party image

Picture taken from rear of tractor just under seat. Is this the line feeding the lift cylinder (under the metal housing) via the tee in the picture? If so, I guess I need to take off this big cover to get to the relief valve ? Is this where it is? Don't want to do this unless this is where I need to go. Also, there is a shaft right above the tee that is broken off, I can move the shaft with no effect on the arms. What is that shaft for?

Thank for the help!
Bruce

Lift Arms ARE NOW WORKING!!! in reply to Bruce in KS, 09-06-2005 12:19:55
Decided to check the arms one last time and was amazed they lifted and lowered seemingly out of the blue!

Had no idea how it got fixed, until Larry U. called me to tell me he saw from my picture I had a problem with the linkage to the left/under the lift arm. You can see in the picture that a pin had moved out of the linkage. I saw this right after I had taken the picture and had already tapped and moved the linkage a few times, still didnt get the pin in all the way. The linkage was either bowed the wrong way, or the pin not engaged enough to get the linkage to work correctly. I had no idea how I had fixed the problem until Larry U. called after I got it working! Talk about luck. Anyway, my work isn't done, PTO slips with the mower on it. I didn't get off the hook yet. Figuring out how to check that problem currently!

Thank You Larry U. and J. Schwiebert for the phone calls.
