My 550 turns sharper one way than the other. I have tried adjusting the front wheels, I have checked the tie rod link, to make sure that one was 2 9/16th longer. I want to check the pitman arms to see if they are in the correct position. What is the proper way to do this?

Thanks!
Mike

I assume you have checked this, but turn the steering wheel "lock to lock", noting the number of turns -then center the steering wheel, and check that the steering arms on both sides of the steering box are vertical. It is possible to put the sector gears together one tooth off, which will make it steer further in one direction than the other. In that case, one steering arm would be angled forward, and the other rearward, when you center the steering wheel.

Thats my problem one is pointing forward and one is pointing towards the rear. I didn't know if I could just pull the pitman arms off and reposition them, or do I need to pull the steering column off? I want to make sure that they are suppose to both be vertical.

Thanks for your help!

To clarify a little, when steering wheel is centered (ie, halfway between "lock" in both directions), the arms on the side of the steering box should be the same (basically vertical), and the wheels should be pointing straight ahead. If its not, I've got a shortcut to correcting the problem (without disassembling the steering box)- email me - mmittge at quik dot com.

Boy if I remember correctly there are some "blind Splines" for the pitman arms to attach too. I do not think you can install them incorrectly. Is the liner travel for both pitman arm equal?
