This is a continuation of questions regarding a 1800 gas engine. I have looke in my IT manual and the answers are not in there. So here goes:

1 There is 3 types of head bolts. Which hole does the oil supply ( to rocker arm ) go in the head. I have two head bolts that have a 9/16 fine thread comin out the top of the head of the bolt - where does it go and what is its function?

2 The guy that did the valve job removed the rocker arm bolts that I had threaded back into the holes in the head ( probably lost them too!!!). What kind of bolts are those- I bet the have a threaded part the goes thru the valve cover???( special bolt?)

3 I have found 6 nuts that are "odd" and I cant figure out where they go. They are 1/2" fine thread. They are "taller" than a typical nut - the "extension" is smooth ( the wrench would go onthe lower part). I thought these might be to secure the rocker arm but it doesnt appear a 1/2" bolt would go thru the valve cover ( could be wrong)

I appreciate your help. Geeting closer all the time

The oil supply bolt is the rear bolt under the valve cover. The 2 bolts with the thread extension go on the outside. One goes in the middle hole in the outside row. The other one in the hole behind it. They are used with lifting eyes to remove the engine. The front hole is used when no auxilary drive unit is used the rear one if the tractor is so equipped. Studs are used to hold the rocker arms and valve cover in position. They are 3/8 course thread where they thread in the head fine thread on the top end. The half inch ones the way you describe do not ring a bell in my memory at all. Make sure you clean the threaded holes in the block and the threads on the head bolts and lubricate them before installing them. Questions?

JEG, To #1 - I think those two are outside the valve cover and are for lifting brackets , most likely at opposite ends of the head .

#2 -- Being an automotive machine shop , I highly recomend that you never leave bolts or brackets or anything else that is in the way of cleaning or laying a head on the bench to do the valve seat grinding work or to set it on its' side to reassemble the springs etc. Here if you leave it on the head and it is not required to do the valve job , you will get those parts returned cleaned and in a box. Flat rate mechanics are the worst , they always send a head complete with guts-feathers and all, they say it cuts into their time to strip the head,
but they want the machine shop to do it for them and not charge any more . Your bolts are probably in a box in the machine
shop all cleaned up, just forgot to hand them to
you.

#3-- can't remember those.

george
