1900 vs 1950

What are the differences between a 1900 and a 1950? Are they not both GM 4-53 powered? What is the HP rating of the tractors? Aside from being famous for being loud how did they compare to the 1850D's for fuel comsumption and lugging power. Any highway tractor with a old 2 stroke Detroit that I ever drove was useless unless you had your foot planeted to the floor, they always died fast as soon as the RPM's dropped below 1500. Just curious as I see a 1900 coming up for sale nearby.

Most 53"s dont have alot of lugging power. There a speed engine they use high rpm to keep going. the 71 92 110 all have alot of torque i have drove alot of v6, v8,v12 71"s and they go like crazy and stand there ground, the last v6 i drove was good, i never had to down shift much just hold her to the floor and she wouldnt drop pased 1700 and it used less fuel then the 220 cummins in the other trucks i think the last truck they got was a kenworth with a 3406 and it used more fuel then the cummins and detroit.. I also drove a TST24 buggy about 4 years ago with a 6-110, yeah it was loud. new muffler every week and it melted off by friday night. used 300 gallons of fuel in one day but I could load in at 4 or 5 mph(2nd gear) easy I could never lug it passed 1400 wide open was 1750. but it was fun to drive the rear engien was a souped up 6-71T and it could hardly keep up to that wore out 110!.. I have seen guys in the oil patchc with 550h.p 8v92TT"s pull some wicked loads and crawl up vally hills at 80km and shift one gear and they hold there rpm..

As a rule, the 2 cycle engines take more fuel than the equivalent 4 cycle engines.

You must be crazy, all the two strokes I have burn way less then the comparable 4 strokes. You MUST not ever owned a two stroke!!!!! !

We have (2) 990's & (2)1950 fwa's & they take considerably less fuel than our 4-cycle higher hp tractors.This spring I could dig w/ a 1950 a couple hours longer than my 1755 diesel on same amount of fuel,and the 1950 had more power(and sounds way cooler). ~brad

The engines are all 4-53 Detroits. The 1900 A series only have a 4-53 with a 2 valve head. The rest are all N series 4 vslve engines. A 2 stroke does not lug like a 4, yes you need to keep the RPM up. I am not at hone to check thid out. The B series 1900 is right at 100 Horse Power Of course the A models were less than that,in the upper 80 range if I remember correctly

John S. Are you sure 1900 b and c and 1950's had "N" engines? To be a true "N" I thought they had to have the 21-1 pistons?(IT book says 17-1 for 1900 and 1950)Is book wrong? Or am I wrong as to what constitutes a "N" engine?

17:1 is correct for the A series. 21:1 for the rest of them.
