I have a 520 baler that is missing ties on both sides. In the manual it suggests that the setting of the bale compression springs can cause the ties to be missed. How do you determine the setting of the spring tension in the back?

Trial and error, mainly. Try loosening each side 2 turns or so at a time, and see if it helps. Looser tension can cover "a multitude of sins", as they say, but sometimes the knotters are just so worn that you can't make a reasonably tight bale. Most common cause of missing ties on both sides, however, is too much tension. You should also look at the little gizmo the twine goes through when it first comes out of the twine box, to maintain the tension of the twine (usually two plates with a spring(s) pushing them together). Make sure it's not froze up, and is maintaining tension on the twine before it gets to the bale and knotter. Also, sharpen the twine knives, if you haven't already done so. And check to see that the arm that pushes the knot off the billhook is contacting the billhook at the right spot. As a last resort, install a comfortable seat back there, and have the Mrs. watch for missed knots. When she waves, you stop and go back and tie the knot. Coupla days of that, and she'll be wanting to "untie the knot". No kidding, though, I actually know someone who did that. She seemed fine with it, esp. after she found out what a new baler costs.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I too have just bought an old Cockshutt 520 baler to bale a small field for the kids horses. Is it the same as the Oliver 520 baler? Of course, no operators manual came with it. I am trying to figure out how to run the twine and set the knotters. So far I have been unable to find an operators manual only a parts manual, do you have any ideas where I can find one? It needed some restoration and I have taken a guess to run the twine and had it running for a few minutes, though it wasn't tieing the two ends together, and only had a knot only one end of the twine. Then the chain broke to the knotters. I have since fixed the chain but now it is stalled and will not turn. I am wondering if there is a timing issure with the chain and something else. Any help would be appreciated.

I think it is the same, but not sure. You can get a manual from Floyd County Museum, 641-228-1099. About 20 bucks, and you have to have one to set up and troubleshoot a baler, IMHO. Be sure you check timing before you put power to it, after breaking the drive chain.
