Grabbed the camera this evening and took some pictures of my Moline overhaul that is going on right now. Got the 585ci diesel out last week and had lost rings in #1 and #2 and had cylinder wall scarring. Also had a cracked piston on #6 so it was needing an overhaul bad. I am going to keep the 585 and not switch to a Cummins ( I know big shocker) But in keeping with true Shep type power "grunt grunt" I am going to put a turbo on the engine and bump the power up a tad.

Here is the engine sump and crank. Crank and cam looked great, the heads are OK and the front jug needs replaced.

I"m glad you"re leaving it a MM. A couple of things we did with the D585 in my 2-150 when we had it overhauled were line boring the block, and having the rotating assembly balanced. I learned that trick at the dealership when we used to overhaul 310"s, you can actually hear the difference in an engine that been balanced. The factory turbo is on the micro-fiche cards for the A4T-1600 under "altiude compensator" and originally was only offered for units sold into high altitudes.

Take notes and pictures of the turbo modification if you would. I wouldn't mind doing one to these once I get a G-1355, in green of course. Could be next year. Hope you've got a MM mechanic on the line to help you; I've heard these are a bit tricky to put back together with getting blocks and heads uniform. Good luck and thanks for the update Shep!

I am taking lots of picturs as I go. The turbo should not be hard, I have pictures or mkuhns white that he did and it doesnt look too hard.

I am working with Evertte Brothers on the engine overhaul and he is getting all the parts togeather for me, so he should keep me streight. I havent heard about the blocks and the heads being uniform, I will check on that. I did know that the rod bolt tork is incorrect in the book.

This should be an interesting overhaul, I am kind of excited to start going back togeather with the engine.

I think the head bolt torks are also wrong in the book. I will have to look in my book if I can remember. Did the AT1600 have the turbo on it?

Thanks for the tip, I will double check that. I know there is one head bolt that is a different tork than the rest, but I will check that.

I think some of the articulate tractors did have a turbo as either an aftermarket add on or I think a few may have come from the factory with a turbo. Least that is what I have heard

Say Shep- Is this the Moline you got from your local dealer last year?

I was at Maibachs last week. They do a lot of Oliver convertions. Brad Maibach just finished a 1650 using a Cummins 4B. They turned it up some and it was putting out 96hp pto. He said it used a third less fuel. It is going to a dairy farm near Akron somewheres. He said the 1850 was the easiest to convert. Might be what is driving up the price on donor machines. Mike

No, this is my cajin moline that came from Lousiana about 2 years ago. It still has rice and cane tires on it and it really likes to drink spicy diesel fuel :-)

Neighbor just did a 1650 with a 3.8 Onan engine (very simular to the 4B Cummins) and it really sounds and runs good. I really like that conversion, but I would rather have 6 cylinders than 4.

The 1850 diesel is the easiest to convert by far, and the 2-105 and 2-110 white are the next easiest. Anything with a Perkins engine a Cummins will drop right into with no frame modifications.

But what is the fun in that, you need a challenge every now and then. :-)

I finally got around to doing the hydraulic filter conversion on this tractor too. I bought two set ups from Surplus parts about a year ago to do this and I really like the way this turned out. I put a cut off in the line so I can change the filter without draining the system and now have a spin on filter with a vacume gauge. Should work out nice if it doesnt leak. I will report on how it works out.

What a mess of parts lying around. I hope to start painting the sheet metal next week sometime and order all the engine parts I need. I hope to have it running in time for corn chopping this October, will see if that happens or not.

Great to hear from you again Shep! Seems you've been a little busy lately... Me 2. I've almost got my 1600 running finally, should be next weekend if I get my radiator back. I installed a battery yesterday and so far the electrical system checks out. I still gotta light a fire under my brother's butt to get the sheet metal painted, but I'll run it naked until then. Donovan from Wisconsin

Like you, I can't wait to chop corn this fall either. The 1600 will be back at the helm of the blower, the way it always used to be, and the 1855 will be putting in it's second season on the Fox, unless of course I get an 840 SP Ollie....

I guess I'm dreming on that one...

Yea, I have been covered up here lately. We finally got all the grain off and the beans in the ground last week and I hope to have a little break until second cutting hay comes.

I have been following your 1600 rebuild and it looks really good, you are going to be real happy with that one when your done.

Keep posting pictures as you go and I will try and do the same.

Yeah, I was going to ask someone about that. The valves look really good and the machine shop is going to grind the valves and seats this week and put them back. They are the origional valves and they look good and so do the keepers. I warned the machine shop guy about the possibility of the valves dropping and he was going to look them over real good and see if anything looked bad or not. I have a really good machine shop that works with me to solve problems and not just put things back within spec. What do I need to look for to tell if they are the new style???

I will likely get the heads back this week and I will take a picture. They are pressure testing one head that has a crack between the valves to see if I have to replace a head or not. How much of a crack can you have between the valves before it starts leaking coolent???

I am boring the jugs .02 over and the front jug will have to be replaced because of the scarring. I will try to get some pictures of the busted pistons too.

The new valves have been thickened right where they break.I had 3 break on my engine and i was NOT useing a turbo. You can't tell when one is going to break by looking at them. There are few of these engines in this area, but I know of 4 that have broken the old style valves several times.I don't know of any that are still being used.

All three of our heads were cracked between the valves. Cracks were about 2-3 time wider than a hair line crack. We put them back on an have been running it that way for 4 years so far without any problems. You might want to think about a double disc clutch also. Your single disc will be on the edge of handling all that torque.

Thanks for that reassurance, I figured if the heads dont leak under pressure test then I am putting them back on.

I ordered a 6 button HD clutch like what I have in the 2150. The 2150 clutch holds 210 HP with all 4 wheels digging pulling the DMI ripper so I figured the same clutch should work on the Moline, I am only wanting to put it to 180-190 HP. The clutch that was in the tractor was still OK, but I figured since I am looking at the clutch right now I would go ahead and put it all in new and not have to mess with it.

Is the double disc a full woven clutch like in the trucks?? I have never messed with one before in a tractor so I know nothing about them. I have always used button clutchs in various pads.

Things are coming togeather, the three speed should be fixed by next week, the heads should be done this week and I am ordering pistons this week. Going to start painting this weekend and the decals will be ordered today. My goal is to have it finished and break the engine in on the silage blower this fall. We shall see.....

The double disc we use is out of a 2-180,4-180, 2-225, 170, 185, 195 White. We used the same flywheel, but got it drilled for the different bolt pattern for the 2-150 (will bolt directly to a 3208 and 3150 flywheel). We also had to get a shorter throw out bearing holder for a some more clearance. The clutch is a 6 pad 13". Only draw back is the price, $200 for the throw out brng holder and $600 for the clutch setup. Our 2-150, 2255 and 2-180 (all 210+ hp)all now share the same clutch and can handle the power without slipping.
