I have read on here that you can replace the type A fluid with a universal hydraulic fluid, are there any specs to avoid or to look for? or are you better off just sticking with dextron? Fluid does'nt look fresh anymore and just wanting to change it. Not sure which is better. Thanks in advance.

Type A is dexron. They are the same thing these days but watch out type F is a whole different story. It has more friction material in it. thats why ford always used it and could use less clutches cause the fluid had more grip.

I am going to give you a kind of political answer. The hydra power drive also in plain terms had the 2 different direct drive clutches. They were the Bronze plate (early models) and the fiber type commonly called paper plates. I would need to see the latest in fluid recomendations but Type A will work for sure. It might be interesting to have you give us the serial number of the hydrapower and the tractor serial number. I will leave you with this though. When I worked for my former employer we had a line of PTO's for trucks (Chelsea). We all know Allison is a popular automatic transmission. We all know the military has many of them and in different models. Allison has a recommended fluid list. The PTO also had to use the same fluid and work. The PTO for Allison applications also has a multiple disk type clutch similar to the hydra power. Not all fluids will have the same chareteristics but they may work for the same period of time or shorter periods of time. It also list alternate fluids that can be used. This may and can be important in a battle zone. some fluids and some conditions also have shorter change periods.

bradk is right on this. The reason that automatic transmission fluid was recommended in the Hydrapower and the over/under to start with was that universal hydraulic fluid was not in common usage as only Deere used it.

Stick with dextron, when you have something that works don't change it. Larry

I use the dextron in my three Olivers , two have the 2 speed shifter and one has the three speed . ( Wish they all had the three speed ) . I have seen several posts on this site from people who use universal tractor fluid (hydraulic fluid ) in these auxiallary units with no problems . I just figure Oliver knew what they were doing when they originally specfied the fluids for the units so why not stick with that .
