I took the top plate off the tractor to get to the pto clutch. (This plate also covers the regular clutch). The fork is not connecting with the pto clutch. I want to take the pto clutch out but there is the regular clutch bearing tube (looks like a cone) in my way. Am I doing this wrong? Will I have to split the tractor to get it out? I've adjusted the pto clutch from below the tractor but that was not the problem. How can I get the pto clutch to align with the fork? thanks in advance for any help.

If the PTO actuating fork is not engaged with the release collar, you have a problem. Do a "Z" split per the manual. Easy and requires much less disassembly. A little over an hour. This will give you good access to the PTO clutch hub after you remove the engine clutch release fork&shaft. Also remove the PTO actuating fork&shaft. At this point you should have access to whatever has come adrift or broken.

thanks James. I guess I need to get a shop manual. I have a parts manual but that dosn't help much. I think I'm at the point you refer to but can't figure how to get the engine clutch release fork & shaft out. Jerry

You can't get thr shaft out it's still engaged in the clutch disc. You are making more work for your self by taking the the top off. In a z slit the front slides off and the PTO and the throwout bearing and housing can be removed and the entire PTO exposed, repaired. The Z slit makes it easy to reassemble, the clutch splines are lined up and slides together.
