Oliver 55 Steering Problem

Lost a few teeth again, any idea's. Someone once said that a Ford steering box would fit with some adjustment with the pitman arms. Any idea's out there. I love this tractor to much to give up on her now Thanks in advance

Before I bought my Super 55 I had been hearing rumors that the steering boxes were weak. Mine has been apart and am glad to say looks good.

I don't know if a ford steering box will work and can't help you there.

But, I was advised of a few things with regard to Super 55s. #1. Don't use a front loader, or if you do, use a light weight model. #2 Use the proper front tires to minimize drag. A 1 row or 3 row farm tire is easier on your box than turf tires or small truck tires.

I have a Super55 with a heavy Oliver loader. I've
got 6.00-16 Implement tires in the front. Would I
see a great steering benefit from switching to a
6.00-16 3-rib tire? It would run about $180 to
do this(new tires, tubes,mounting).

When I got my Super 55 its front tires were truck tires from a small truck (Chevy S10) and steering was very difficult.

I do not have a front loader and started looking into one. After talking to several people, they told me I'd have trouble steering with a heavy front loader, especially because of the front tires on the tractor.

I never did buy the front loader, but I did get 3 rib tractor tires (Firestone for about $95/pair mounted). At the same time I opened up the steering box, cleaned it and regreased it. I also installed a new bearing. The tractor steers like a dream! I can't believe a little grease and a bearing made all the difference, I believe the new tires on the front end made all the difference in the world!!!

There is much less ground contact with a pair of old style 3 rib tractor tires and with more modern tires. Consequently there is less drag when turning and steering is much easier. This is my experience, and it matches with what I was told to do by other "experts" who turned out to be right!

Thanks for your comments Bob. This loader was already on this tractor but I liked the Super55 so much I bought it anyways. I'll go to the new tires for $120 mounted but I will try to refurb the steering box as you did. Was it hard to do? Could you give me any pointers to make the job easier? My I&T manual is hard to follow. Also, what was the part number of the new bearing you replaced and where is it located in the steering box?

Someone also suggested to me that I should replace some bearings/seals on the front spindles. Anybody do this and what exactly is involved?

I have a 550 gas (1962 by the SN). Broke the RH spindle about 8 years ago--found a replacement w/ bearings at a boneyard (for $75). Broke the LH in late August, checked the same boneyard and another, kept finding RH, then had to order a new one ($208!!). I already had the wear bushings for the top and bottom of the knuckle. There's a dust seal that's hidden on the inside of the spindle assembly. I ordered a new set of bearings with the new spindle (numbers are somewhere around here). There are grooves on the inside of the hub that makes removing the old races fairly easy. Packed the bearings with grease, put them in the hub, put the hub on the spindle, washer, castle nut, then pulled it up tight, backed off part turn and inserted the cotter key. Not unlike the other front axle spindles that I have seen.

The bearing I replaced was on the right under the steering wheel itself at the top of the steering column. The steering box on my tractor was an easy job to do because there was nothing wrong with any parts of it, it just needed a REAL GOOD cleaning and new grease. I simply took it apart, without the help of a manual, cleaned 40 years worth of gunk out of it and put it back together with new grease. Maybe I was lucky, but nothing inside was broken. As for the bearing part number, I couldn't give you one because I went to my neighbors machine shop, showed him the broken one and he dug around and found something new that happened to fit!

Others have said that the spindles are another weak spot, again, on my tractor they have not posed a problem, so I have not messed with them.
