Okay... school is finally over and I can work on my tractor again. I am starting with putting the hydraulic pump back together. Looks simple enough, and i have the complete manual. However, there was a posting here years ago of a fellow with the step by step reuild. He put vasoline on the "O" rings to hold them in place, but I think John Schiewbert said to use something else, and not to use the vasoline.... anybody remember? And do I use 10W 30 or should I use a specific hydraulic oil?

I probably did, when I started with the dealer in 1960 the 1800 was new. Our service rep said to get out of that habit and use a little plain gun grease. When I worked for Dana and they owned Gresen hydraulics at that time and we also had some Gresen classes they had vasolene and one of the chief engineers came in and saw it. He said to get out of the stone age, throw the vasolene out and go with a good grade of gun grease. With the pressure some people run now I might start thinking a good high temperature grease. Remember tehnoligy moves forward and that big book you refer to was printed over 60 years ago. I taught a private class the other year on a new piece of equipment 2 years ago and the relief valve on that piece of equipment is set at over 7000 PSi. The only way you can the hydraulic oil in the system is through a 3 micro filter so you need to pump it through the filter to assure you have clean oil for the system. Questions. Enjoy the summer!. J
