My first tractor, the opportunity fell in my lap and now I'm trying to figure out what I got into.
Its a gas- starts and runs fine for a couple minutes. Its not overheating, charging system is good. Ignition wires look old and tired. Would a crack or short in the coil wire cause the sudden shut-off effect?
After a minute it starts again, could it be the coil itself? I haven't played with one of these for 40 years.
Thanks

For what it"s worth, my 1550 had the same problem. Started and ran fine until it warmed up. Then it quit an wouldn"t start until it cooled off. It was the coil. Replaced it and it has run fine since. Same problem with my 550. Put on a new coil and same result. Good luck.

I just went through the same thing with my "new" Oliver 88. It turned out to be trash in the gas tank restricting the gas feed into the settling bowl. The bowl would stay full but the engine would quit. Sometimes enough gas would dribble through and sometimes not. If I blew back the line, it would run okay for a little while. I've removed the gas tank for cleaning.

Thanks for the info. I had an old car that did that to me once, I should have remembered...

Thanks for the quick replies, the carb. clean is good advice.
The broken wire sounds like just the kind of problem I have here. I will check it out this afternoon and let you know how it works.
IF the rain lets up!

I would take the carb apart and clean it very good. An in-line fuel filter is also a good idea.
