A neighbor and good friend of mine has an oliver 1650 diesel that he's started with a squirt of ether into the air cleaner for years and years, and when it starts it puffs out white smoke until it's warmed up. It seems to run and pull fine. He bales with it every season, and he even drove it over when I got my tractor stuck last year. What do you think the condition of the engine on this thing is. I really love the oliver 1650 diesel with over/under shift. If I ever get a chance I would like to buy this tractor off of him.

Although it is recommended to never ever use ether to start an engine, when a pre-heater & good batteries are available some people do it anyways. We bought a 1650 diesel from our neighbors who had used ether on it from day one (I don't think they knew they had a pre-heater button) we use the tractor almost daily for bailing, raking, pulling gravity boxes, etc. The tractor now has 9,000 hrs on untouched engine. I suppose it all depends on how much ether was used and if used w/pre-heater. Retired dealer owner has told me many time that the 1650 was the best tractor that Oliver ever made. Best I can tell you is use your own judgement~Brad

How well do you understand a diesel. I can tell you what the problem is, now I would like to see the tractor run before I threw in my 2 cents worth. Money wise? I want to see and listen to it run. Next question have you ever heard of an engine leak down test?

I understand basically how diesel engines work. I'm just not sure of this engines condition as to why it smokes so much at start up and has so much blow by. I know that you can have a totally healthy diesel engine that smokes and has blow by, but this 1650 smokes a great deal of white smoke at start up. White smoke is unburnt fuel right? I'm pretty sure this tractor has about 7 or 8 thousand hours on it, and the only thing done to it since 65 was the injectors were replaced a few years ago. Even the clutch is original. And yes I have heard of a cylinder leak down test. I just was wondering on the conditon of the engine. I have never seen it work that hard just pull a square baler and a full 18 foot hay wagon and pull my farmall m out of a mud hole.
