Just bought a 1974 1855 Dsl. My brother was changing fluids and is wondering what is recommended for use in the Hydro shift. He was told to use a universal hydraulic trans fluid.

His concern is that he hears a slight growl when under load in 3rd range, less in 2nd range and good in 1st.

Any ideas or help on this would be helpful. The service manual is on order and hasn"t arrived yet. Hopefully not a gear problem.... Thanks

Check the chain and coupler for wear.

Universal Hydraulic fluid will work just fine; later over/under hydraul transmissions were shipped from the factory with hydraulic fluid. You should attend to the noise before further damage is done. It probably is the input shaft bearing or possibly one of the other bearings.
