Hello,

I have a 1650 diesel industrial that is overheating. After about 20-30 minutes of running it will start to bypass the radiator cap. The temperature gauge shows normal, but I’m not sure it is correct. I replaced the radiator cap with no effect. I also removed the thermostat and boiled it and it opens about 1 inch.

I was thinking running it without the thermostat and removing the radiator cap to check the water pump flow. I did this when the t-mat was in place and it didn’t look like there was that much turbulence in the flow. There was water movement, but nothing like I see in my automobiles when I do the same. Is this a problem? What is the best way to trouble shoot the water pump?

Any other suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank,

Kerry

Our 2-70 did the same thing, found blown head gasket.. Chances are that is your problem, take your fan belt off and run the motor, look in your radiator and see if it bubbles. If so you are losing compression through your gasket. I really hope it isn't, but at least you caught it soon if it is.... Good luck, Marc

Thanks for the info.

One question, how noticeable is the bubbling? Is it like blowing bubbles thru a straw in a soda, or is more like a bubble or two and unless you’re looking for it you might miss them?

Thanks,

Kerry

YOu should be able to see the bubbling. BUT our 2-70 did not bubble for quite awhile, like 2 years. It was very frustrating to finally figure it out. I would think you should see the bubbling it it is that. Once again good luck, Marc ps if you are close I will come help you!!! I am in N.E. Ohio

You need the thermostat in or the water will just recirculate back to the block and not go to the radiator.
