I settled a deal for an Oliver 550 today. I got it for $2500. It runs great! It"s my first tractor, and I hope it lasts a long time. It"s a 1969 based on the S/N.

It has power steering, remote hydraulics and the complete drawbar assembly. It starts right up and purrs! The hydraulic cylinders need a little attention with some emery cloth (little rust spot on each).

Heck, I even picked up a Ford 918H flail (?) finish mower for $100 at the same time! The seller bought it from some spare farm parts and hadn"t ever hooked it up. It might or might not work, but it seems to be freely rotating, etc. It was worth a chance.

I hope to have some pictures up soon!

Matt

A dealer near me has two much worse 550's than that one listed for $7000 each. You got a greadt deal.

The 550 is one of the best utility tractors ever made.

Best of luck to ya with your 550. My 550 is the favorite rig of my herd. Just a fun useful rig and for mowing it is the cat's meow. You got it at a great price also.

Sounds like you did well on the tractor. The H series Ford flails are junk. Try to find out what you have without putting much into it; you may be tossing good money after bad.

All the money I've put into it so far is the cost of a drive shaft ($80), bringing the total to $180.

It rained today, but I made one swaft around the yard to see if the mower works. It mowed, but had what looked to be an area it didn't cut so well. There was kind of a "line" of grass an inch or so higher than the rest. Further inspection showed that one of the "flails" were broke and one was bent in the area of the "line".

Heck, as long as it mows my yard for a while, we didn't lose too much. So far so good, but I'll definitely keep the advice in mind if something fails or needs fixed on it.

Thanx,
Matt
