Need to know what potential issues I am dealing with on my 1855 Cummins. The 3 speed does not want to engage if you shift it into the under drive. If I shift back to direct the tractor moves again. The missing low range does not happen all the time. Any ideas what could be my problem and I need to know if I operate it without low range, will I be doing any harm or damage. Thanks in advance.

The others gave you good advice, but I would like to comment. I bought a 1750 with the hydra-power. Low range in that is similar to the over/under in low range in that a sprag clutch is driving. Low range in my 1750 would sometimes not drive and the tractor would stop. I changed the oil to White hydraulic oil and a new filter and from then on, under always worked. Maybe just an oil change will work for you. There are two filters that are supplied for this unit from AGCO. Get the more expensive one, 30-3475425, but be sitting down when you hear the price. The cheap one is part 156513 A but is not as good a filter.

The component responsible for driving the unit in Under is the sprag clutch. In Direct and Over, the sprag merely "ratchets" or freewheels if you want to think of it that way. You can type in sprag clutch into a web browser, and you can get some good technical data on how they work, far better than I could succinctly explain it in words. You can certainly continue to run it without Under drive, but I would be concerned about oil contamination. In order for that sprag clutch to be malfunctioning, something changed, and it probably involved some contamination of the oil with debris from this part. The Over/Unders are very simple to work on, and you could easily replace the sprag yourself. Just be sure to orient it correctly in the unit and check before you drop the motor back in.

The reason for asking is that we are done with field work with this tractor. The only other job is to hook it up to one of our irrigation pumps and let it run when needed. We will check and change the oil to make sure it's at least on the healthy side. Thanks for the info

I don't think I would be too concerned about using it for stationary work. Since you said the low range drops out once in a while, the sprag is probably mot completely wore out. Next time you shift to low and it happens, push in the clutch and come to a stop. Let back out on the clutch and if the tractor moves normally, then the sprag is not that bad.

What happens is that there are "drag" strips on the sprag. They are what engages the sprag. When they get worn they do not engage the sprag as easily. I'd change the oil and filter and keep it in direct while doing stationary work. WB.
