550 clutch and manual question

#1. Picked up a 62 550 earlier this spring and the clutch is acting wierd. Sometimes, when you push the pedal down, the clutch does not release, so you have to hit the brakes, which then pops the clutch loose. It seems the longer the clutch is engaged, the worse it sticks. Frankly, it's a little dangerous. My hunch is the forks and/or throwout bearing are messed up. When engaged, it holds well, I've moved 360 bu loads of corn on fairly level ground and don't detect any slipping.
Any ideas on the cause, and solution?

#2. Since I'm going to be doing some repairing, I called Floyd Cty museum for a shop manual. They have two versions, the $20 I&T one, and the $150 fleetline Oliver one. After I do the clutch repair, I need to replace the PTO seal, and next winter tear into the engine, it burns a little too much oil. Any advice on how good the $20 manual is for this, or should I be forking over the big money?

Thanks everybody, and remember there's no better colors than Meadow Green and Clover White!

You cant get the big manual on disk off of ebay for about $20. Just print out the pages you need as you work. However, it doesn't work on Mac, but I am going to guess you have a PC.

You can get alot of Oliver Manuals here -- including the huge master service manual:

Link

They have some other tractor manuals too!

The operator and parts manuals are $14.95 each if you want to download them, and the master service manual is $21.95.

thanx,
Matt

Is this the type of CD you are referring to? There isn't a service manual for a 550, only parts, which I already have. I suppose the Super 55 is close enough.

Has anyone used one of these? Are they true replicas of the Oliver service manual?

Actually I have one, but have never used it since I have a Mac. However, ShepFL swears by it.

Yep is well worth the money. It doesn't have the Super 44, 440 or Super 99, 990, but those guys have big bucks to buy extra manuals,,,, (tongue in cheek)

I would fork out the big money. I have both and never look at the I&T . The big manual has everything in it.
