How clean is clean enough for a diesel storage tan

I"ve had given to me a 275 gallon tank that a neighbor bought at auction which I assumed had previously contained home heating oil. I was all set to have it filled with diesel fuel tomorrow. I figured I had better check and make sure it was clean before I filled it and discovered that it had about 5 gallons of drain oil in it and all sorts of other solid stuff of unknown origin. Obviously I am not putting any fuel in it tomorrow. I am wondering if it is worth trying to clean out for fuel or will I always have dirty fuel problems. Any suggestions on how to clean it? It will make a dandy burn barrel if I decide not to use it.
Thanks for any input
Pete

If you do decide to use the tank. Put a pump on it and filter the fuel with a minimum of a 10 micron and a five micron filter on the line leaving the pump. That is after you clean the tank.

I have had three different neighbors that had fuel problems in much oftheir equipment. Filters started plugging time after time. In all three cases the tanks had been in place for a long time and sludge built up for a number of years. My fuel supplier ended cleaning out one of the fuel tamks and he said the sludge that came out was horrible. drsludge cleans tanks for a midwest company. He could tell you more.

I have relatives in Switzerland and the government sponsors large fuel oil tanks in peoples home to have added reserves to for wartime or other shortages. Tanks there are regularly pumped out, cleaned, coated, fuel filtered and recoditioned. Fuel oil has a algae that grows in it causing this sludge and old tanks seem to be a problem.

Pete, I would flush out the tank and make sure you have an algicide for it.

Nick
