I just traded for a 550 and the pto will not engage. I disconnected the engaging lever and checked for engagement. The lever seems to engage as it will click into place when moved. The pto will turn very slowly when engaged and can be stopped by hand. I don't have a parts book yet and wanted to see if you guys could give me some suggustions.

You might as well try adjusments first. The PTO had similiar problems on the one I had years ago and I took it to the dealer for repairs. I think they had to split the tractor and install new clutch disks. I was told not to put too much grease in the clutch bearing at a time since excess grease would get on the clutch facings. Also not to jerk too hard on the PTO lever as this would pull the adjustment loose. BTW, the 550 has a stub PTO shaft held in with a small bolt through a collar. If it gets loose and falls out, the shaft comes out. Replacement shafts are not cheap! They are great little tractors. The one I had was diesel, remote hydraulic lever, and that drawbar attachment that is hard to take off so you can use the 3 ph. KEH

I believe that the setup here is like on the 55, 77, and 88. The pto is driven directly off the engine to the rear of the tractor. At the rear is a over center clutch and the appropriate gearing to get the correct 550 rpm output speed - usually about 3 to 1. If the pto is turning but can easily be stopped, the over center clutch is not engaging. Either it is improperly adjusted or the linings are worn out. I'd guess adjustment would solve the problem.
