70 Fenders and throttle....

Went to local oliver parts place today to get a valve cover gasket for my 70. While I was there, I looked around. They have parted a ton of olivers there and I thought it'd be interesting to see what all they had. My fenders were pretty rough and the left one is definetly shot now, as dad was plowing with it a couple weekends and hanging off it. it is ripped pretty good. I asked about different ones at the dealer and they pretty well laughed at the thought of getting in a good used set. They had a ton of 77/88/etc. style fenders, the ones that mount on the ear cast into the axle housing. I got to thinking---why couldn't I build a bracket to adapt the 77 fenders onto a 70. I know it wouldn't be original, but I would rather have that than no fenders or junk fenders. We farm with it a little and it is just kinda peace of mind having fenders on all my tractors. Has anyone ever done such a thing? Would anyone be interested in a set of them if I built them? I am not sure what a set would be worth.

I also got to looking while I was there at some later 70's with the throttle on the steering wheel. Has anyone converted an older 70 over to that style? That reaching down is a lot more of a pain than just reaching behind the steering wheel. Maybe I just want it to be like my farmalls..... .. Anyway, I am just wondering what all would be involved in switching it over. Looking in the parts book it looks like there is a sleeve that goes around the steering shaft, the lever, a bellcrank, and then the rod to the governor might be different. IS there anything else I need? Will my steering gear housing have the 2 bolts the bellcrank mounts to? The tractor is 50 miles away so I can't really just go out to the barn and look.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I have a 1937 70 with bad fenders. my son is rebuilding them using a metel brake and reforming the skin.It can be done. also it has had the throttle replaced with the newer steering mounted unit. just the lower dash was opened up poorly to bring the rod up.

The sky is the limit. I just put a set of fenders from a 1941 70 on my 1936 70. The bolt holes are the same. As I recall, they are pretty similar on my 77 so I could have put 77 fenders on it as well.

I put a set of Oliver 60 fenders on my Farmall M. They were very close in size and shape. Like you, I just wanted fenders regardless of where they came from. I put a set on my John Deere A that I think came from a Massey Harris and that looked good as well.

It's your tractor. Make it safe and don't worry about it.

Oh! you might need a little scrap metal, a saw and a welder if you stray off the Oliver fenders.

I have a pretty good set of original fenders for an oliver 70 if you want original style fenders.
