Well, got both the 70 and the 88 moved to my property. And found out the 88 motor is free. What's the diiference between an 88 and a Super 88? Also, it looks like there are electric controls for the hyraulics?? Where do I find the ID plate? Would like to know what year it is. I will take some pictures of it and get it listed. Hope someone will like it. Need to get back out there to find some more to rescue. These two are the first Olivers I have rescued. Did not realise they were 6 cyl. Seem to have some real neat standard or maybe not standard options to them.

The early 88's had the serial # tag on the right side of the transmisson, near the right brake housing. About '52 they started putting the tag on the lower part of the dash panel on the left side. The differences between the 88 and the S88 were slight, yet important. The S88 had the pads on the front engine tub for mounting equipment, the 88 did not. The S88's had the #3 series hydraulic systems with the levers on the top of the unit, the 88's had them on the side, ALTHOUGH the new style #3 can be retrofitted to older tractors. The engine on the S88 got a boost in HP from larger bore, higher RPM, and higher compresson. Of course the closed engine shields are on the 88's while the S88 has open engine sides.

oleblu: I will check all of that tomorrow. I know it has a series of hydraulic handles and some electric type contols on the steering column. I don't know what you mean by the "tabs on the engine tubs"? But I will try and find the serial number. Does anyone know how many of the 88's were LP's? Thanks again to everyone.
old: I wish I needed the Oliver tractors, they seem to be very unique. Much different than the Farmall's I usually rescue.

oleblu was talking about the flat mounting surfaces onthe front and sides of the s88 that the 88 does not have.As far as the engines go the s88 has 1/4 in bigger bore, larger intake (not much),slightly bigger valves making aprox.50 hp where the 88 was tested about 38hp.There are plenty of other small differences such as the rear axles are 1/8 in larger s88 has disc brakes and probably 100 other things the purists could point out.About being an lp don't know how many they made but they sure are sharp restored.Hope this helps, good luck.

Well the day you put a good old Oliver up to a pull with a farmall of the same HP you will see why the old saying was Oliver for the tough pulls. Farmalls are ok but I'd take an Oliver any day before a farmall.

The serail number plate on the 88 should be on the dash on the left side. Also should be able to find the numbers behind the starter also. As far as the differances they are small like carb etc only way to know for sure which it is, is to run the serail numbers

old: thanks once again for your help. Hope to find it a new home with someone that will take care of it. It was a REAL bear to move it and the 70 (with cultivators). Had to use two trucks and trailers, moving them almost 25 miles. But I think they have real patential.
