I live in central PA. I found a "49 77 Row Crop (gas) for sale. The tin is in good condition. It has both side curtins. It is missing the right rear side panel. I will also likely need a new rear rim. Rear tires are 100% and 75%. Does it run? not at this point. It was vandalized! The vandel broke off the the spark plugs and the fuel sediment bowl with a hammer. It is also missing the starter. Is it engine stuck? I dont know! The gentleman that is selling it is asking $975 at this point. He plans trying to get it running and of couse asking for more money. Should I take thae gamble? Should ask to make sure it is not stuck first. What else should I look for?

another way to check if the engine turns over is use a long extension and a ratchet, there is a whole in the front of the grill I believe the nut on the lower pulley is 1 1/8" you will need a deep well socket, you should be able to turn it over that way,I find thats the best way to adjust valves also, hope this helps Rich.

Thanks Guys! I will try the fan trick and if that appears to be ok I might make a lowball offer. Now, I need some advice on how to convince my wife I need a tractor to restore.

I think $975 is too much. With no starter and a bad rim, I would think $600 is more like it. If you hold the fan belt real tight, and turn the fan with your other hand, you can see if the crankshaft pulley is turning. It it turns its not stuck. Watch Lancaster farming. Last week there was a super 77 in good shape for $1975.

Thats a little high, but with the side curtains maybe not to bad, if the engine isn't stuck. A starter will cost you around $100-200 depending on where you get it. I have a couple for sale my self but they both run good and I'm asking only $1500 each but they don't have side curtains.

My thoughts where to ask him to prove the engine was not stuck. And then offer him a little less. How can you tell the engine is not suck with out the starter? Can you tell this by pulling it? Is there any way to tell from the pulley? I don"t see a hand crank, but he may have one. What else should I look for? To me it looks good, but this would be my first tractor. It still has most of the paint, except on the dash. Although there is 0 paint on the dash, it is still solid metal. There are no dents in the tin. The pedals still appear to have most of their paint and do not appear to heavily worn.

If the fan belt is tight you should be able to grap the fan and watch the crank pulley, try to move the fan and see if the crank pully moves. I check a lot of tractor engines that way. I've picked up a number of tractor in the condition you are talking about and most of the time I don't pay over $500 and most of the time half that.
