What are the current recommended lubes for an Oliver Super 55 Diesel going into Summertime? My manuals call for 10w-30 year round for the engine but I've seen folks recommending 10w-40. What is the appropriate ratings for these oils nowadays (I can't seem to find the API DS or ICEI Type C ratings thus far)? The transmission calls for SAE90 in winter and SAE140 in summer so I guess a 90w-140 oil would do the trick. Again, are there various duty ratings today for this type of oil? The hyrdaulics call for 10w-30 year round. Also, my manual makes reference to detergent oils but I didn't realize that they had detergent oils back in the 50s. Thanks for any input!

Without getting into oil classifications too much, any oil you purchase today with a C designation will be far better than what they had in 1955. Rotella T 15-40 would be excellent for this application. Use 80-90 in the trans and regular hydraulic fluid for the hydraulics. The steering gear, most folks pump full of grease. that was a later fix for leaky seals.

I went with Rotella 10w-30 (some C classification) for the engine; Shell 10w-30 SuperGuard for the hydraulics; and 85w-140 for the transmission and steering gearbox. This seemed to be the closest to the original spec that I could get and I was similarly advised that all this stuff is way better than what was available in the 50s. I was kinda surprised to learn that the detergent oils were around in the 50s as I had somehow thought them to be a newer innovation. I do have a leak issue with my steering gearbox and will presumably switch over to the lithium grease at some point here (can I simply drain the gear lube and pump in the lithium or is it best advised to thoroughly clean out the gearbox first?). Thanks for the help.

Yes, you can just drain the 90W oil out of the gear and pump full of grease. I've done that on a couple of steering gears, and they work just fine.

Okay, I went ahead with this and used a black multi-purpose lithium grease. As I pumped it into the steering gearbox what was left of the gear oil and eventually the lithium grease came out the small hole on the top of the steering column (between the dash and the steering wheel). Why is there a hole there? Anywho, it steers way better now and the leaking seems to have subsided. I suspect I'll have to tear into it eventually but we're up and using the tractor for some good useful stuff at the moment (finish mowing and mulch hauling). Thanks for the help!

I would use 15W-40 in the engine, 80-90 gear oil and yes do use a 10W-30 in the hydraulic but make sure it is for a spark ignition engine. The first letter for this oil will be the letter S while for your engine oil make sure the letter is a C. Questions?

Would that 80-90 gear oil (for the transmission) be the same as I would use in the steering gearbox? S (spark) for gas and C (combustion) for diesel in this day 'n age? Thanks for the help!

I do not know what you are using in your steering gear box? There are 2 letters to the API classifications for motor oils. I do not want to get into it now but the latter in the alphabet the newer and higher quality the oil is. CD used to be in 15W-40 has a later letter same for gas engine oils. I will try to look at some cans tomoorow. Questions/
