My 770 is not running very well these days. It is difficult to start and I find myself constantly playing with the choke to keep it moving. Is there any company that is selling rebuilt ready to install carbs or do I need to rebuild my own. I have not rebuilt a carb since high school and I don't mind if it stays that way.

Dave,
Sinceyou live in Alberta, you can try Westward Parts. They have both rebuilt OE type carbs and a 'can-fit' Zenith type for most Cockshutts (and their Oilver relatives). They also have 'zip kits' if you chose to rebuild the carb.

Westward has offices in Manitoba (the centre of the Universe), but they have a shop in Red Deer. You can phone them at (I assume you know the Alberta area code) 347-2200 or simply visit them at www.westwardparts.com

When they say easy that is an understatement. Other than the cleaning you can rebuild one in less than 5 min. I don't know if anyone would recommend it but I have used "the works" toilet bowl cleaner to clean the steel on really rusty old carbs. It is simply hydrochloric acid which is what they use to clean steel at the mills. You obviously have to be real carefull and fully rinse the steel afterward. I don't know if the acid would affect brass or not so I always made sure I had it all removed. The usual culprit to these carbs is in the bottom of the bowl there is a brass jet that gets clogged. Most likely you can clean out this jet and put a new bowl gasket in and it would run. While you have it appart it is real easy to rebuild so you might as well do it all. Once in a while the jet in the bottom of the bowl is not quite big enough for todays gasoline. I have had to enlarge the hole slightly on some tractors.

You might check for fuel stoppage due to a faulty filter bowl/garbage in the fuel tank. If you have to apply choke to keep it running, it's starving for fuel for some reason. Larry NE IL

I took the tank of off and flushed it. There had been sediment before in the tank blocking the drain and I had hoped this would be the case, but, it has not helped the situation this time. I may have a partly plugged jet or a bad gasket as there is some fuel leaching down the side of the carb.

Hi
Sounds like you need a rebuild. These are not that hard to do. (compared to automotive ones)I can walk you thru it and get you the parts if you like. Most likely all you need is a needle and seat, and a gasket set.If you have questions please write or call. jerrystractor@aol.com
Thanks,
:) Jerry

Jerry, I live in central alberta. There are several jobbers out here in the west and my local AGCO shop has a great partsman so I could probably get all the parts I need. I am relieved to hear you say that they are not hard to rebuild and I may work up the courage to give it a try. I do have a manual for the tractor that will likely have a schematic. I just get nervous working around small easily damaged carb parts and my last try at carb rebuild was an old Rochester Quadrajet off my Oldsmobile. It did not go well and I ended up getting a rebuilt exchange. I will keep your number if I can not easily source that parts locally. Thanks for you help.

Don't worry too much about it.Not hard at all.And I would still walk you thru it even if you don't get the parts from me.( not like I make too many service calls to Canada)
Thanks, :) Jerry
