Well, spent the weekend working on the 1955. Got the new chain coupler on, and a few other things. My pto shaft had a leak coming out from around it. Not a bad one, only a few drips a minute when the pto is in use. So, I take the 4 bolts that hold the pto shield on out and remove the pto shield and the bearing pops right out! according to my parts manual there is suppsed to be a bearing retainer that goes between the bearing and the pto shaft, it wasn't there, so I got one coming. Now, it looks like the seal on the inner side of the pto housing is the culprit for the leak, I guess no oil is supposed to get passed it. BUt here is where I am puzzled, if there isn't supposed to be any oil behind that seal how does the outermost bearing get lubed? Is it a sealed bearing or what? To replace that inner seal the pto housing must be removed, It is not a bad leak so I am going to wait till next winter. My first hay fiels will be ready in 2 weeks and I've still got to install the new rod bolt's, all ready got the pan off but now waiting on the washers, got to put the exhaust manifold back on mount, the brand new turbo, get it hooked up, replace a few hydraulic hoses, replace the remote hydraulic hoses, put the pto back together, buttom up the bottom of the engine, fill everything with new fluids, bleed the fuel system from installing the new injectors, wash it up, put all the sheet metal back on, and hope she starts. After that I still gotta get the mower conditioner tuned up with a new sickle and some new u-joints. Gotta go get the baler from the dealer that is working on it, an get a tedder bought. All of this and still work a 60 hour week, and my best friends bachelor party and wedding, so I am cutting it a little close, but I think I'll get er dun!

Dont foget to check crankcase clearence to the new rod bolts.Service bulletin states you may have to grind on crank case or the rod bolts for clearence.I've put two engines together had to grind on one of them just in one spot.Turn your engine over by hand and check.

Oh ya, one more thing. On the pto safety shield there is a sticker that says limit the 540 rpm pto to implements that pull less than 60hp. 1000rpm any implement. Why is that and do you guys follow that requirment? My baler doesn't pull that hard. It says 55hp minumum but I pulled it all last year with my 42pto hp kubota and it handled it, made er bark a little but she did it. But I did use a 15' Rhino brush hog on the 1955 and I know it was pulling more than 60hp and it had no ill affects that I could tell. Am I stupid for doing this?

For what it's worth when I asked a dealer about that PTO limit he said it was OHSA.

I believe his PTO dyno went to 250 HP on the 540 side. I don't think you have to worry too much.

The faster the rotation, the less torque. So the slower 540 can put a lot of twist on the implement and break it easier than a 1000 RPM.

THe bearing that is one the PTO stub shaft is sealed and does not get oil from in the pTo. Be awefull careful about your oil leak. One of mine leaked a little and I mean a little... THe bearing behind the seal went bad and made a mess of the Pto. I certainly don't want to scare you, just make sure you check it everytime you shut her off and start her up.. I can't imagine that if the implement is 540 you would hurt anything, and so forth for 1000. Good luck, My 1955 I would never trade for anything now that the updates are done. She is putting out about 135hp. on the dyno, and I hardly ever pull it that hard. Marc

Well, I just drained the trans and final drive, installed a new filter, and will be refilling with new fluid. I will watch it like a hawk until I am able to tear er down and fix it come next fall. Is the outer sealed bearing supposed to have any up and down play in it? Mine has a little, but very little, I'll change it after hay season to. I am learning an awful lot working on this thing. I never thought I'd be able to do all this stuff myself but I am glad I now can, cause I'd a spent a fortune in labor if I'd a took it to a repair shop. I've all ready spent $2500 in parts, with the new turbo, new injectors, filters, gasket's, rod bolts, chain coupler, hoses, and oil. This thing turned out to be more than I figured for, but I am having fun at it. Now knowing the things I had to fix it probably wasn't worth the $6000 that I gave for it, but oh well, live and learn. Once I get er all fixed up it ought to last me a pretty good while. It is only gonna run the baler over 80-100 acres a year and maybe do a little brush hogging. I'd a been better off buying a newer smaller 4x4 or 4x5 baler and pulling it with my Kubota if you are figuring forma $$$ point of view. But this is a little more fun. The 1955 with a straight pipe sure does sound pretty barking on a 15' cutter or running a full baler! It has a 4" dia. stack on it now and I am thinking of putting a 6" dia. on it, that would really make er sing!!! The green paint is real nice, but the white on the cab is a little faded and surface rust is starting, so I think I'm gonna sand up the outside of the cab a little and spray some new white on er and she'll be good. I'll take some pics of er tonight and post em for ya fella's so you can watch a rookie mechanic and farmer getting started. At least my wife is supportive. Most wives would be pretty mad by now, me spending over $30,000 on this hobby now. But she doesn't say much, She saw the new turbo laying on the bench the other night and said how much was that, I said $580, she said ok!She even like's to get in there and turn some wrench's!

Just got done doing most of these things to a 1955 for another guy. We had the injection pump and turbo rebuilt, new rods and mains, rear seal, clutch and PPA, PTO hub and shaft, drive chain and couplers. Of course he had to find a bolt off of the High/low shift rail when he drained the gear oil this spring. Had the shift lid off and found a lot of play on the high side gears. So guess what, we pulled out the top shaft without removing the rockshaft hsng like the book suggests. We had to replace the high side gear and a few other parts. Two weeks and 36 hrs later the 1955 is back together and running after all of that. I just worked in the morning a few hrs before work and on the two Saturdays.

Congratulations on your partner. I am quite happy, but she sure likes to complain about my farming, and we live on her family's dairy farm... Anyway, no the bearing should have much play. Just keep an eye on it. Six inch pipe may look good but will do nothing for performance. My 2-105 is putting out over 200hp and all I got on it is 4", and it barks loud enough she knows when I'm coming home.. I don't think you over spent. We all do it, and we all learn from it.. Stay in touch.. marc
