Oliver 550 wont idle below 1000 rpm

Engine is tight, runs well above 1000 RPM. Carb and ignition in excellent condition. Wont idle down without dying. I've fiddled with the idle mixture and stop screw till the cows came home with no luck. Is there a low idle adjustment on the govenor??

I know you said the ignition system is excellent, but I had the same problem with my 1850. It would not idle down at all. I rebuilt the carb multiple times, even sent it away to be rebuilt, still couldn't get it to idle down. The problem ended up being a weak coil. I'm not sure of the 550 setup, but you have to be aware of whether there is a resistor in line with the coil or not.
Hope you get it fixed.

When you find the problem I would like to know what it is. I have one doing exactly the same. Also, I would like to know if Frank Dodson is talking about Humbolt Tennessee. I was born and raised very near there. Used to go to the strawberry festival when I was a kid.

What happens if you pull the choke out part way when trying to let it idle? Have you checked for a leaking intake manifold gasket? Have you put a vacuum gauge on the engine to check it?

Look on top of the carb for an adjusting screw. Some of them had them I believe and it will set your idle mixture. It sounds like it might have some trash in it though and might not hurt to take it off and clean it realy good.

I HAD THIS TROUBLE WITH MY 550. I SOAKED CARB IN SOLVENT 2 DAYS, THEN BLEW IT OUT GOOD WITH AIR. PUT A KIT IN IT THAT HAS THE THROTTLE SHAFT SEALS. I THINK MINE WAS SUCKING AIR AROUND THROTTLE SHAFT A LITTLE. YOU ALSO HAVE A INTAKE LEAK OR BAD COIL. TRY PULLING CHOKE OUT AND SEE IF IT WILL TRY TO IDLE. IF IT DOES YOU HAVE A INTAKE LEAK

Mine is doing the same thing. 1/3 choke and its ok. How do I locate and fix the intake leak? Maybe little squirts of starter fliud to find out exactly where it's leaking? Can I goop it somehow, or will I need a new gasket?

I WOULD PULL OFF INTAKE/EXHAUST AND CHANGE ALL THE GASKETS. BE SURE TO TORQUE TO RECCOMEMDED SPECS.I LIKE TO RE-TORQUE THE BOLTS FOUR OR FIVE TIMES. THEY WILL LOOSEN A BIT EVERYTIME THE TRACTOR HEATS AND COMPLETLY COOLS.KEEP CHECKING THEM WITH TORQUE WRENCH UNTIL THEY NO LONGER TIGHTEN.(DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN) IF THIS DOES NOT FIX IT CHECK THE SEAL ON THE THROTTLE SHAFT ON THE CARB.
