I have a slow cranking 1941 6-volt Oliver 70 tractor. My friend says that it can be upgraded to 8 volts by adjusting the generator(having a generator expert do this of course)and using a 12 volt battery. Anyone familiar with this or know how it is done?

the regulator can be adjusted to put out 9 to 10 volts and a 4 cell battery installed (8 volt battery) we did this on a 400 Farmall years ago and it worked out good helped starting quite a bit and all the lights worked the bulbs did burn out faster. I don't know if you can still get the 8 volt batteries

Theres only 3 reason you should have a problem with 6 volt. Weak battery, the battery cables to small/old, or the starter is getting weak. I have a 1949 77 that is 6 volts and it starts all year no matter how cold or warm it is

replace your battery cables with o or oo cables with soldered on ends. clean your ground connnection on the frame real good and leave it at 6 volts.
