Have an 88 diesel that doesn't get much use and each Spring the governor control shaft tends to bind up in the bushing causing hard starting and very poor gov response. Probably varnish from the fuel but is there a way to prevent it?? One parts book shows an O-ring on the shaft but mine had none - took a spare pump apart to find it didn't have one either. Seems an O-ring might cause more drag on the shaft and there has been no fuel leakage into the oil problem. Anyone know for sure about the use of an O-ring on the shaft and a way to prevent the binding?? I have been cleaning it up and using vaseline for a lubricate but it doesn't last for more than a year.

Maybe I am reading something in your statement, but where are you putting this O-ring? It does NOT go on the shaft that moves. Also the pump is counterbored for the o-ring. It is samll in cross section.

Larry is Correct. American Bosch made some changes in the control units in say 1952. This is over 50 years after the fact but I wonder if you have a mismatch of parts. The control unit was changed as well as the retainer holding it in position and the timing cover itself. First question. Can you furnish the complete model of the pump. I did find a Bosch instruction sheet for the changeover (by luck) Do you have at least .004 clearance between the end of the control arm and the retainer? What model pump do you have a 70 Z, Y or an X version? Also how is the rest of the governor? When is the last time the bearings on the governor fulcrum shaft were checked? When you take the control unit out how free is the metering block? Do you get smoke when you try to start the tractor? How much transfer pump pressure do you have? When you have the engine running and you try to over-ride the governor with the shut off tab does the engine try to correct itself? Check that stuff and get back with us. Also what RPM are you running the engine? That sure does not look like the correct governor spring?

Thanks to both for your comments! The pump is PSB 6A - 70Y -2920E, goes on a 1953 88. When the shaft is free, the engine runs great, sounds good, and starts good so I haven't really paid much attention to the other pump parts. The external lever spring is not the original which had 12 to 14 coils and was replaced because the eyes were wearing thin. This spring came from a name brand inj pump service and has been OK for what I do. RPM is set at 1750 with a tach. The first sign of a problem is poor gov response when letting the clutch out or light load like driving up the ramps on a trailer.

The 4th photo has a red arrow which points to what looks like an O-ring groove and where the one parts book shows one. Think I will quite worring about an O-ring on the shaft. The bushing does seal against an O-ring where it goes into the pump body - no problem there.

Let me know if you do have more thoughts. I plan to clean the shaft and bushing as best I can and put it back together. Thanks again.

Oliver did come out with some improved parts in this area.I can't tell which you have without looking up all that in the books.I cleaned one 30 years ago and it never happened again. At one point that tractor sat for 8 years and it was ok.
