I have no experience with other Super 55s (or tractors of this vintage and size for that matter). My manual steering is extremely difficult to turn to the left (counter-clockwise) and much easier to turn to the right (clockwise). When steering to the left whilst stopped or moving at slow speed there are audible cracks 'n pop noises from somewhere in the mechanism (no such noise turning to the right). At speed the steering effort diminishes as I'd expect but is still harder to turn to the left than the right. If I jack the front end up so that there is no load on the tires the steering is easy both directions. Any pointers for what to check first? I'm trying to get the steering effort down such that my 5 year old can have an easier time of it whilst riding in my lap. Thanks much...

Sounds like it is time for a rebuild of the steering gear box. Probably the bearing race in the bottom is shot- The box accumulates moisture over time, and eventually rusts out the bearing race and/or recirculating ball carrier. It can be dangerous, because the balls are just sort of floating around down there, and can get behind the gear, jamming it. In that case, the steering locks up, and it's best if you're not in road gear at the time. I rebuilt one about 15 years ago, and it wasn't difficut (need a manual- IT manual is fine)- but I've heard the parts are hard to come by now.

Thanks Mike. I was thinking that that's probably the culprit. Any thoughts where I might look for replacement parts once I dig into it?
