My 1954 88 needs a new clutch. I am not really sure how to go about doing it. should I unbolt the engine and slide it and the clutch forward to get off of the shaft? or should I unbolt the PTO clutch and slide it about a foot back until the shaft clears the clutch? If I do that can I just slide it back in when I am done?

There is no need to pull the engine. Pull the PTO shaft out the back. If your tractor has a belt pulley unit, then you need to remove that. Once that is out of the way, the main power transfer shaft coupler on the back of the clutch housing slides back allowing you to remove the bell housing. If you had a Super model with the power booster drive, then you have to pull the engine.

First thing to do is get a manual for it. I don't have my manual right here now but I think you have to pull the PTO shaft and also pull the engine. The reason is that there is really 2 shafts one is the main and the other is the PTO thats how they get the live power
