Good morning. I just purchased an Oliver Model 82 sickle mower at auction yesterday. There appears to be a gearbox with a plug on it. I pulled the plug and the gearbox was empty. What is the recommended fluid that should go in there, and how much. I"ll try to aquire an operators manual as soon as possible if they are still in print. Thanks for any help folks. Randy

It's built well but you need to keep the bar in shape and the break-away spring loose enough that the mower can break-away if you hit an obstruction. If the knife is constantly locking up with loose ledger plates or chokes because of knife adj, the slip clutch (on the chain case top shaft)gets overworked. If it can't break-away, either the front of the tractor has to slide around or it bends the mower frame.

It has all the needed adjustments, bar tilt, bar lead, pitman alignment, and cutting height. The two caster wheels provide good stability.

Picture is a little lame as mine is apart for paint. SAE 90 at or within 1/2" of the lowest illustrated plug (1/8" pipe plug). Add oil in the pipe plug on the cover.

Sure would be good to just take the top cover off and have a look see. Check oil level, chain tension, and top shaft rear bearing. If the gasket tears, you may have to make one from gasket paper.
