I recentley purchased a 1959 550 that was supposed to be a running tractor. After getting it home it would not start. I cleaned the carburater, gas tank, sediment bowl, replaced clogged fuel lines, new spark plugs, points and spark plug wires. Finally got it run and now it starts and idles fairly well. Tried to run it around the barnyard but it will barely pull itself on level ground. Finally got it back in the barn. with it idling I started pulling off spark plug wires one at a time. I can pull wires off cylinders 2 and 3 and it makes no difference in the way it runs. I exchanged 2and3 plugs with 1and4. The problem stays with cylinders 2an3.
Ipulled all plugs out and checked compression. All cylinders have between 120 and 130psi. What could cause this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Did you check the cap for cracks? Make sure the firing order is right, it is 1 2 4 3.

Try changing the plug wires between the cylinders which make no difference and the ones that do to determine if the wires have a break in them. I suspect that is the problem with the good compression #'s. Other possibility is the distributor wiring is not correct with the firing order. Neil
