I have asked this before but I lost the information. I am wanting to order new sleeves and pistons for a perkins 354. Who manufactures the best kit? If I go to Agco will I necessarily get Perkins parts? Are there jobber kits to stay away from?

Could try Caterpillar. Should get Perkins parts there.

It is your money. The trouble I have been having lately if I call a Perkins dealer for any Perkins parts, the first thing they want is abuild number. For the parts and engines I call for parts there are no build numbers. I have been out of this part of it for at least 10 -12 years but you could order the sleeves seperate because they fit more than one engine. Not all 354 Perkins take the same pistons. A few yesrs you could also get semi finished and 30 over pistons from Perkins. In other words bore the block and go 30 over on the pistons. Those sleeves have a tight fit. I have had to use a sleeve puller larger than the OTC 17 ton model to get them to move. Questions?

I have managed to get one sleeve out already by running a weld bead up the insides and then welding a slide hammer contraption I built to the sleeve to get it out. It was a little time consuming but worked. I have been told to watch out for pitting around the sleeve that could leave a new one prone to leaking. Is this why you suggest boring the block?

No I meant to bore the old sleeves. I also know of a dealer that did what you did and one of the welds was a little too much and welded the sleeve to the block. Not a good situation. Boring bars do not like to cut weld. Do you have all the old pistons out?

I think he meant boring the old sleeves while still in the block and fitting oversize pistons.
