My 30 steers hard, so I took the nose off and the cover on the steering gear and remembered that someone (Phil Heisey ?) said you either need to add or take shims out in front of the worm gear, I can't remember which. Did I remember this correctly? It doesn't look like the worm gear has much end play. Do these have other issues? With the front end jacked up, it seems to get a bind on it especially when I turn to the right just off center. Any info would be great.
Thanks,
Kurt

Thanks for the info, I was able to make a shim to go under the block under the pin plate and now it steers fine. On to the axel seals!
Thanks again,
Kurt

Hi Kurt,

Here we go again. Forgot to add my email address on the first response!

Add shims to move the pins on the steer plate higher into the steering worm gear.

Let me know when I can assist you further.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys...but you'll need to add shims to LOWER the quadrant / pins engaging into the worm gear, right?

Also, the binding you are feeling MAY be a thrust issue on the WORM shaft / bearings. You can shim the flange / seal end accordingly also.

Hope this helps.

An after thought...I'm talking to the row crop (narrow) front end steering box. I don't know if your set-up is different. Another idea occured to me. IF the steering output shaft bushing is severly worn, then it could cause steering box gears to get in a bind, along with bad worm gear bearings. Rather odd that your steering is binding. They usually just get sloppy as they wear.
