I recently bought a 1958 540 Cockshutt that was not running when I bought it. I cleaned the carb & got it to run, but the engine starts to knock when I idle it up. Does anyone know about what it would cost to overhaul the engine? Or, am I better off trying to find a good used one? I"ve heard that the engine was also used in other applications.

The very first thing I would do is find out how much oil pressure that continental engine has. If it is quite low, I would check the oil pressure relief valve and make sure it isn't stuck. This is common on the old continental engines.
The relief valve is in back of the plug located on the right side of the block, just under the carb. Take out the plug and spring behind it. Be careful not to lose anything. Push a screw driver in the hole several times. The start engine and do the screw driver thing again, and see if your oil pressure comes up. You may have to push the screw driver in somewhat hard to get the valve to work right. If this does't do away with most of the knock, Then follow John's advice.

It is your money, but the first thing I would do it troubleshoot the engine a little bit and see what is causing the knock. Have you tried to short out the plugs one by one to see if the noise will go away. Start there. Continental F-series internal parts are fairly common. Remember there are many F-models out there and they are in lift trucks and they are totally different in the front and a few other places, but bearings, rings, etc interchange.
